Why you don’t wash your hands properly anymore… and why it matters for your business

Perhaps the most dangerous sentence a business could ever say, "we do it this way as that's the way we've always done it"

Inertia. It’s the proper name for â€˜doing things the same way because it’s the way things have always been done’.

Inertia is the reason so many people don’t change their gas supplier, or press snooze on the alarm every morning … and if you’re honest, the reason you no longer sing ‘happy birthday’ for 20 seconds each and every time that you wash your hands.

Inertia. Think about it.

Is there a benefit to paying more for your gas?

What benefit to setting the alarm earlier and snoozing, rather than just getting up when it goes off or simply setting a later alarm?

Or to no longer be washing hands properly? Covid spread through bad hygiene, we know this. We also know good hygiene will make it harder for the next covid to spread. Yet inertia strikes – we go back to how things have always been.

These are fairly minor things in day-to-day life.

In business however, inertia can be hugely damaging.

Inertia in business. Be aware of it. It can be the reason for over-paying suppliers, inefficient productivity, poor spreadsheets and systems, office time wasted, incorrect insurance cover and all manner of drains on business resource.

Identify any inertia in your business. Then remove all the bad, inefficient and expensive processes that exist ‘just because’.Or as the Government may say: Aware. Identify. Remove.
